CBD oil should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. A 2018 study from the American Academy of Pediatrics warned women to avoid marijuana during pregnancy due to the potential risks to a baby’s development. Although it is unclear how CBD contributes, CBD is known to pass through the placental barrier.
Instead, CBD is thought to influence other receptors, including opioid receptors that regulate pain and glycine receptors involved in the regulation of the “feel-good” hormone and neurotransmitter serotonin.
However, the effect of CBD on each addiction type was often very different. With opioid addiction, for example, CBD showed little effect in minimizing withdrawal symptoms in the absence of THC. By contrast, CBD on its own appeared effective in minimizing drug-seeking behaviors in users of cocaine, methamphetamine, and other psychostimulant drugs.
CBD oil is an extract of Cannabis indica or Cannabis sativa—the same plants that, when dried, make marijuana. CBD oil is believed by some to treat pain, reduce anxiety, and stimulate appetite in the same way that marijuana does, but without its psychoactive effects. CBD has also shown promise in treating certain types of seizures.
Among the few human trials evaluating CBD’s anxiolytic effects was one published in the Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry in 2019. For this study, 57 men were given either CBD oil or a placebo before a public-speaking event. Anxiety was evaluated using physiological measures (such as blood pressure, heart rate, etc.) and a relatively reliable test for mood states known as the Visual Analog Mood Scale (VAMS).
Remember, because CBD oils are largely unregulated, there is no guarantee that a product is either safe or effective.
To determine an exact dose of CBD, remember that each drop of oil equals 0.05 mL of fluid. This means that a 30-mL bottle of CBD oil will have roughly 600 drops. If the concentration of the tincture is 1,500 mg/mL, one drop would contain 2.5 mg of CBD (1,500 mg ÷ 600 drops = 2.5 mg).
If you prefer a spray over drops, Plus CBD’s pump is the way to go. Both sizes contain 5 milligrams of CBD per serving and come in peppermint and unflavored options.
CBD can be taken a variety of ways—including in capsule, gummy, and cream form—but it's most commonly sold in oil tinctures. The best CBD oils come with a graduated dropper to help you accurately measure your intake. Keep reading to learn more about the top CBD brands on the market.
Best for Pain: NuLeaf Naturals Hemp Extract
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) regulates a number of other systems in the body by controlling the release of various compounds. The body's natural cannabinoids assist with this regulation by binding to CB1 receptors, as does CBD and other plant-based cannabinoids. That's why CBD is used by some people to help manage mood, sleep, and pain. CBD works indirectly in the ECS by inhibiting the inactivation of anandamide, which is a neurotransmitter. This leads to activity on the CB1 receptors and the release of serotonin, also known as the "feel-good" hormone. As a result, CBD is sometimes used to reduce anxiety.
The non-GMO and pesticide-free hemp is grown, extracted, and tested in the U.S., plus it’s certified by the U.S. Hemp Authority, so you know it meets high quality, safety, and purity standards.
The product comes in natural olive oil and mint chocolate flavors, and is made in small batches using alcohol extraction. This process provides a rich mix of hemp compounds, including phytocannabinoids and terpenes.

The CBD industry in the United States has exploded recently but here’s the thing about retail CBD: not all products are created equal. Most brands selling CBD-rich hemp extracts are doing their best to create a quality product but as many secret buyer surveys have shown, many bad actors are dumping products that are mislabeled for their cannabinoid content or even contain no CBD at all. In addition, the FDA has been issuing warning letters to companies making unsubstantiated medical claims about their products, but they can’t keep up with the Green Rush and the many vendors saying things far beyond the science At PlusCBD, we care about your health. That’s why we create safe effective products and make no medical claims about them. CBD-rich hemp extracts are nutritional supplements designed to work with your endocannabinoid system. Here’s a guide on how to distinguish quality CBD products from products you should avoid. Here’s 3 questions to ask: #1 Does the Brand Meet Quality and Safety Standards? The first thing to look for in your ideal CBD-rich hemp extract is that it meets both quality and safety standards. The company needs to have a dedicated Quality Assurance/Quality Control team that has the power to block products from going out the door until all tests are completed. Any solid company will also be certified as compliant according to current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP). This rigorous paperwork trail ensures that the organization conducts their due diligence to have their methods and practices written down clearly and adhered to closely. CGMP compliance is standard in the pharmaceutical and natural supplement industries but with the newness of the hemp CBD world, many of these companies haven’t taken this challenging but necessary step towards consumer safety. CV Sciences prides itself as being the first company to achieve the next level after that: research to support a conclusion for our hemp extracts being Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS). The road to GRAS involves a lot of research and tests of toxicology performed by independent laboratories to prove the safety of the ingredients. Once the results came in, CV Sciences became the first company to achieve self-affirmed GRAS status in the CBD-rich hemp extract industry. #2 Is the Company Transparent About the Manufacturing Processes? Many of the issues with CBD products arise during the processing and manufacturing of agricultural hemp. This includes everything from growing and harvesting the hemp to extracting and bottling the products. The logistics includes all the processes it takes to package, ship, and sell CBD products in-store or online. Why does this matter when you’re trying to distinguish quality CBD products? Because if you can’t figure out where your products are coming from and how they’re made, odds are the company doesn’t know either. And think about it: if a brand doesn’t care about their products’ development, you can guarantee they won’t care about how those products affect your health. For that very reason, we created our Seed to Shelf promise. You can trace the life cycle of your full spectrum hemp products from when we first harvest the seeds in Europe to when we release our final full spectrum hemp oil products to the public. From Seed to Shelf, we offer complete transparency for your peace of mind. #3 Is the Product Lab-Tested? The FDA publishes an extensive list of warning letters sent to CBD companies making false claims about their products. We recommend steering clear of any CBD companies who’ve made inaccurate or misleading statements about their products in the past. Also, to avoid dealing with fraudulent CBD brands in the future, always make sure your beloved cannabidiol products are tested by a third-party laboratory. Lab-testing helps to assure the claims made on a product’s label are accurate. This includes making sure the cannabinoid levels on the label are accurate as well as tests for contaminants such as pesticides, microbiologicals or heavy metals (the hemp plant is particularly good at taking up heavy metals from the soil so these tests are essential). For these reasons, we lab test all PlusCBD Oil products a number of times during the process – both in our internal lab and by a respected independent third-party lab. That way, you’ll be doubly sure you’re getting exactly what’s on the label with our products. Don’t believe us? See the results for yourself on our QR Codes page! There is a variety of CBD oil products available to you. From our CBD oil drops to CBD topicals, PlusCBD has a CBD product for you.
How to Distinguish the Best CBD Products
Your endocannabinoid system constantly works to keep you healthy. This crucial and wide-ranging system controls a number of processes within the body, including appetite, stress, the immune system, sleep, and much more. When the endocannabinoid system is out of balance, your health can be compromised in a number of different ways. The endocannabinoid system plays a crucial role in our overall health. Because of this, it’s essential that you keep it strong and healthy for optimal performance. While research is still being done to fully understand this complex system, recent studies have shown that there is one compound that can help support the overall function of the endocannabinoid system. That compound is called CBD. In this article, we are going to explain the endocannabinoid system and its relationship with CBD oil. We will also be reviewing the many benefits of CBD hemp oil and discuss what role it plays for your health. What is the Endocannabinoid System? The endocannabinoid system is involved in almost every physiological process of life. The endocannabinoids are found in virtually all tissue types and organs and are especially prevalent in the brain, the glands, and the immune cells. When an organ is damaged, the endocannabinoid system springs into action. When your neurons have trouble communicating, the endocannabinoid system works to protect them. When the stem cells of your skin differentiate into new cells, the endocannabinoid system helps to regulate the process. As you can see, this system is critical when it comes to your overall health. There’s a constant series of cycles and rhythms in our body. The homeostasis of life means a perpetual tug and pull between competing systems and functions. Our bodies require balance in order to perform at its most optimal state. So, what exactly does the endocannabinoid system do? The endocannabinoid system is our homeostasis system within the body. And anandamide – the first discovered endocannabinoid neurotransmitter – is often called our ‘neurotransmitter of balance’. Why Should You Take CBD Daily? The reason to take CBD-rich hemp extracts every day is to supplement your own endocannabinoid system. CBD causes different effects on the various pieces of the endocannabinoid system – but one of the most important is its effects on the FAAH enzyme. The FAAH enzyme is responsible for degrading anandamide – and one of the actions of CBD is an inhibition of the FAAH enzyme. In preclinical research, when the FAAH enzyme is less active at degrading anandamide, the levels of anandamide rise. However, research is still ongoing into these effects. Importantly, the effects of CBD are not limited to the endocannabinoid system. As one of its key researchers, Dr. Vincenzo di Marzo points out, at the biochemical level, CBD is like a Swiss army knife. It seemingly has a tool for everything. Now, keep in mind, that almost all of this research on the biochemical bindings comes from animals, but in those models, they’ve found CBD to bind to a host of other cannabinoid receptors outside the endocannabinoid system: including three of the serotonin receptors;, one of the dopamine receptors; two of the opioid receptors; and a number of lesser known neurotransmitter receptors, such as adenosine, acetylcholine (‘fight vs flight’ response), glycine, GABA (your brain’s most common inhibitory neurotransmitter), and glutamate (your brain’s most common excitatory neurotransmitter). What is fascinating is that CBD also binds to the PPARα receptors on the surface of the nucleus. These control genetic transcription and the production of new proteins and messengers from your DNA. In one study of brain cells, the addition of CBD upregulated over 1,200 different genes and increased the cell’s ability to handle stress responses. How to Incorporate CBD Oil Into Your Daily Routine The most important thing to know before trying CBD is that everyone is different. For some, CBD helps give individuals a good night’s sleep. For others, they find that CBD activates them like a cup of tea. Many others report feeling a sense of calm and balance throughout their day. So how might CBD oil benefit you? Well, it all starts with self-experimentation. It’s good to do your research ahead of time, to ask your friends and family about their experiences with CBD drops, but no one – not your doctor or your pharmacist, nor your CBD company – will be able to tell you how CBD will work for you. In healthy people, the effects can be subtle – as balance is. Our best advice is to start low and go slow. We recommend taking the minimum serving size for at least a week or two to allow the CBD product to balance your endocannabinoid system. This also gives you a chance to learn what times of day work best for you. The good news is that a CBD oil product won’t have any strong psychoactive effect on you. However, you may feel more relaxed or calm after taking your CBD oil dosage. We suggest once in the morning and once in the evening, but as you saw, it’s different for everyone. You can even keep a journal, in the beginning, to help you pay attention to what’s working for you. Plus, there are many different ways for you to consume CBD products. Whether you go for a CBD gummy, softgel or CBD capsule, or CBD spray, there are many different CBD products that you can incorporate into your daily routine. We recommend taking CBD every day because your endocannabinoid system never stops working for you. And every day, you can help supplement it to help with balance and to allow you to live your best life. by taking a CBD product.
