CBD is the chemical compound. CBD oil refers to the oily hemp extract you can actually purchase and consume. CBD is extracted from the hemp plant using carbon dioxide, ethanol, or another method to produce an oil containing a high concentration of CBD. Because CBD oil is extracted from hemp, a strain of cannabis which is naturally low in THC and high in CBD, CBD oil contains 0.3% THC or less, and is therefore legal to purchase and use nationwide.
There are over 20 million veterans in the United States, representing just under 10% of the country’s total population. Many veterans live with chronic health issues, including PTSD, anxiety, and pain.
How Do You Take CBD Oil?
Many individuals with anxiety find CBD helps alleviate their symptoms. In fact, anxiety and depression are two of the most common conditions for which people take CBD.
Veterans are both more likely to experience more pain than nonveterans, as well as to experience more severe pain. Severe pain is more prevalent among young and middle-aged veterans.
This feedback loop, when repeated with a consistent CBD regimen, may eventually cause the individual to remember the trauma less frequently, and to remember it with less emotional intensity. In this way, CBD targets both cognitive and emotional symptoms of PTSD.
The Department of Defense maintains its’ marijuana prohibition on currently serving military members, and military recruiters are required to use discretion when interviewing potential new recruits about possible drug use prior to military service.
The VA official site makes it clear that veterans who use cannabis, pot, 420, etc… are not in danger of losing VA benefits:
Department Of Veterans Affairs Policy On Medical Marijuana
The VA will not pay for such prescriptions regardless of the source and VA rules forbid the use or possession of pot on any VA facility.
The issues facing veterans who use pot while seeking treatment from the VA are more complex.
Military members should not assume that passage of any marijuana legalization or decriminalization at the federal level gives them permission to use cannabis products. In the same way military leadership have the power to ban non-controlled substances such as Spice, Salvia Divinorum, bath salts, and others through an off-limits order, cannabis may also be subject to such treatment even if legal.
The VA published in 2016 that 66,000 veterans received treatment for opioid addiction. Cannabidiol (CBD) alleviates pain, diminishes inflammation, enhances mood, and is an effective remedy for a variety of other ailments, both physical and mental.
A medical paper from 2015 titled ‘Cannabidiol as a Potential Treatment for Anxiety Disorders’ studied the possibility of CBD assisting with erratic and unstable moments of PTSD. The study recorded that “in a sub chronic study, CBD administered daily 1 hour after predator stress (a proposed model of PTSD) reduced the long-lasting anxiogenic effects of chronic predator stress, partially via 5-HT1AR activation.” In an additional study of chronic anxiety, systemic CBD “prevented increased anxiety produced by chronic unpredictable stress, in addition to increasing hippocampal AEA.”
07 Jun Can CBD Oil Help with Anxiety & PTSD In Veterans?
There are several clinical trials and tons of anecdotal evidence on the effectiveness of CBD for helping with many of the difficulties our veterans are currently facing. From helping to relieve symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, chronic pain and more, CBD is becoming a popular choice for many veterans.
CBD can probably be an alternative for opioids for military veterans with PTSD and related depressive symptoms. CBD has already shown positive results for these symptoms.
A study in 2011 investigating the effects that CBD has on anxiety mentioned that “a single dose of 600 mg (CBD) reduced anxiety” – However evidence indicated that the CBD lessens anxiety best “in subjects where stress had been caused before CBD administration.” This means that CBD is ideal for those who get anxious from experiences, situations, or in random moments. Therefore, veterans currently suffering from PTSD who get random episodes of significant anxiety could get relief using CBD oils after each traumatic incident.
